 Steering gear, pitman arm, steering arms, drag links, tie-rod and steering column
66 Without off-loading the wheels, check the steering gear, ball joints and slip joints for wear.
 Check to make sure the steering gear, its hoses and pipes do not leak oil.
 
 Ball joints
67 Check that the dust boots are properly installed and not damaged.
 
68 Check ball joint axial free play with polygrip pliers and a measuring tape. Max. permitted axial free play is 2 mm.
 
69 Check bearing housing parts steering arms (trailing unit).
 

Checking the steering

Let an assistant lightly turn the steering wheel back and forth while you check the steering gear and linkages under the bus.

Max. permitted play in steering shaft slip joints 1.5 mm. Total play including universal joint movement, max. 5 mm.

Steering linkages

On buses with adjustable steering wheel angle and height, check that the clamping for the adjusting device is properly secured when the steering wheel is in the position set.
